Coventry record comfortable replay win over Bristol Rovers to set up FA Cup tie with landlords Birmingham

Coventry ran out comfortable 3-0 winners as they knocked Bristol Rovers out of the FA Cup to set up a fourth round home tie at St Andrews with landlords Birmingham.

Coventry took an early lead when Callum O’Hare threaded a beautifully weighted ball through the Rovers defence, allowing Maxime Biamou to race through and slot past Jordi Van Stappershoef.

Jonson Clarke-Harris almost pulled Rovers level after 23 minutes when his powerful header rattled the Coventry bar.

But the second half saw Coventry make the most of their domination. O’hare was provider yet again after 51 minutes when another through ball played a team-mate one-on-one with the goalkeeper. This time it was Josh Pask the recipient, who calmly finished past Van Stappershoef, doubling the home side’s lead.

Coventry looked even better value for their lead moments later when Biamou scored his second.

A clever Sky Blues corner found Liam Walsh unmarked in the box, the midfielder drilling a ball across goal which was easily turned in by the lurking Biamou.

Dummett and Gayle out as Newcastle injury woes continue

Defender Paul Dummett and striker Dwight Gayle are out of Newcastle’s FA Cup third round replay against Rochdale after limping out of Saturday’s Premier League draw at Wolves.

Both men suffered hamstring strains before half-time at Molineux and were due to undergo scans on Monday morning to determine the extent of the damage.

Striker Joelinton, who played on with a groin problem, is yet to be ruled out of the clash with League One Dale while skipper Jamaal Lascelles could return after recovering from a fractured tibia.

The game will come too soon for midfielder Jonjo Shelvey and forward Allan Saint-Maximin (both hamstring), while defenders Javier Manquillo and Fabian Schar (also both hamstring) and DeAndre Yedlin (knee), as well as midfielder Ki Sung-yueng and striker Yoshinori Muto (both knocks), are still sidelined.

Rochdale have defender Rhys Norrington-Davies available again.

The Welshman, who is on loan from Sheffield United, has been out since suffering a facial injury against Fleetwood on Boxing Day.

That gives manager Brian Barry-Murphy a lift but he still has a number of other doubts.

Oliver Rathbone, Tyler Magloire, Paul McShane, Matt Done and Ryan McLaughlin have all missed games recently and are battling to be fit.
